January 21 – Talk about telling it like it is. It’s one thing criticising individual performances, quite another blasting the whole team.
But that’s what Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has done, delivering a withering assessment of the side and suggesting it might be the “worst” in the club’s storied history.
United fell to a 10th Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday, losing 3-1 at home to Brighton — a sixth loss in 11 Premier League games since Amorim arrived from Sporting Lisbon to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag in November.
Amorim was hailed as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches when he arrived at United but is already discovering how deep the problems lie and how his preferred 3-4-3 formation is not suited to United’s squad, who now lie 13th in the top flight, closer to the relegation zone than Champions League places.
“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that,” he conceded.
“I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed, but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now.”
