January 27 – State associations are planning a no-confidence motion in Kalyan Chaubey (pictured), the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
India has 36 state associations and reportedly more than 20 want to move against Chaubey with the no-confidence motion. One-third of associations are required to stage an extraordinary congress to that end. Jammu, Tamil Nadu and Kashmir do not have voting rights. The state associations are understood to have the backing of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) political party.
Chaubey is a member of Narendra Modi’s ruling party of Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He came to power at AIFF after the exit of Praful Patel, defeating former India international Bhaichung Bhutia in the elections in 2022.
However, AIFF secretary Shaji Prabhakaran was sacked. Last month, Prabhakaran wrote to the ethics committee of AIFF as well as to the AFC and FIFA, launching a complaint against Chaubey for violations of the ethics code.
“There are a number of instances where Mr Kalyan Chaubey has caused serious reputational damages and financial loss to AIFF,” wrote Prabhakaran. “All his actions have resulted in serious consequences to the beautiful game in India. The Indian men’s team didn’t win a single match in the calendar year 2024, it is the direct result of his actions.”
He accused Chaubey of conflict of interest, a bribery attempt, misrepresentation, misinformation and violations of the AIFF constitution in his role as the governing body’s president.
