Julian Nagelsmann to stay with German national team through to 2028 Euros

January 27 – Julian Nagelsmann has renewed his contract as head coach of the German national team for an extra two years beyond the 2028 European Championships.

The contract extension was announced on Friday as part of the German Football Federation’s (DFB) 125th anniversary celebrations.

Nagelsmann had originally been under contract until next year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Since his debut as head coach in a 3-1 win against the United States on October 14, 2023, Nagelsmann has overseen 19 matches, achieving 11 wins, 5 draws, and 3 losses. His only major setback was Germany’s quarterfinal exit against Spain at Euro 2024 after which he was expected to return to club football .

“When I joined the DFB, I didn’t imagine staying beyond Euro 2024 on home soil. But the incredible bond we’ve built with the fans and the team shows we’re on the right track. There’s still so much to achieve,” he said.

Bernd Neuendorf, DFB President, emphasised the significance of keeping Nagelsmann on.

“This renewal is a milestone in our 125-year history. It reflects our commitment not to rest on past successes but to strive for new achievements,” he said.

Although ultimate winners Spain eliminated Germany at Euro 24, the general feeling is that Nagelsmann has steadied the ship after several disappointing tournaments. Germany failed to get out of the group stages of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and was eliminated in the round of 16 by England at Euro 2020.

“We have all created something together – fans, team, and coaching staff – that we now want to successfully develop further. We want to win titles together,” Nagelsmann added.
