January 28 – Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has extended his contract until 2028 after leading the team to last year’s European Championship title.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said Monday that it is “renewing its confidence” in the 63-year-old, who started coaching the nation’s youth squads in 2013 and moved through the age groups to take over the senior team after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
De la Fuente is the first Spain coach to win the European Championship at three different levels, having led the country to the Under-19 and Under-21 titles before the senior success.
The new contract will keep him charge of La Roja during the 2026 World Cup and Euro 2028.
“I know that the RFEF is pleased with my work, but this isn’t solely about contractual agreements,” he said. “Nothing in life is achieved without effort. I believe life works that way, and everything I have accomplished has come from hard work and the support of my colleagues.”
Looking ahead, De la Fuente added: “We will have a better team in the World Cup than we did in the Euros, without a doubt. The players have the capacity to improve significantly. They have yet to showcase their best version. There is great talent in Spain.”
