Europa League set to reach exciting conclusion with 18-game slate

Off the back of a thrilling UEFA Champions League night on Wednesday, it is now the turn of the inaugural Europa League group phase to reach its climax on Thursday evening, with all 18 matches kicking off simultaneously at 20:00 GMT.

With a place in the knockouts at stake, the final round of fixtures promises high drama as teams battle for a top-eight finish and a direct route to the Round of 16.

The British trio of Manchester United (4th), Tottenham (6th), and Rangers (13th) are all guaranteed at least a play-off spot, but with only four points between them, each still has a chance to finish in the top eight.

A late Bruno Fernandes goal secured a 2-1 victory for Manchester United over Rangers last week, pushing the English club up to fourth in the standings with 15 points. A win against FCSB will confirm their place in the last 16, though a draw could also suffice depending on other results.

Tottenham sit sixth on 14 points after their 3-2 win over Hoffenheim. A victory against Elfsborg will guarantee a top-eight finish, while anything less could see them slip into the play-offs. Rangers, meanwhile, need a win and a favourable set of results elsewhere to join them in the round of 16 automatically.

Lazio have already booked their place in the last 16, with 19 points from seven games, six clear of ninth-placed Galatasaray. The Italian side are the only team assured of an automatic berth, leaving the rest to fight for the remaining seven direct qualification spots.

Second-place Eintracht Frankfurt, now without €75m striker Omar Marmoush who joined Manchester City last week, remain on track after beating Ferencvaros last week, sitting second in the standings.

Meanwhile, Ajax (16th) and Roma (21st) can no longer finish in the top eight. The Dutch side must beat Galatasaray in their final match to secure a play-off place, while Roma face a daunting challenge against Frankfurt after their 1-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar last week.

Elsewhere, Anderlecht, Athletic Bilbao, AZ Alkmaar, Bodo/Glimt, FCSB, Galatasaray, Lyon, Olympiakos, Union Saint-Gilloise, and Viktoria Plzen are all assured of at least a play-off spot.

Dynamo Kyiv, Nice, Qarabag, Ludogorets, Malmo, Slavia Prague, and RFS have all been eliminated, with Slavia Prague vs. Malmo the only fixture without any implications for qualification.

With everything still to play for, the final round of the league phase is set to deliver the drama UEFA had hoped for when it introduced the new format.
