FIFA orders Corinthians to pay $8.1m in outstanding transfer fees

February 5 – FIFA has ordered Corinthians to pay outstanding transfer fees of $8.1 million and slapped the club with fines over irregularities in the transfers of both Rodrigo Garro and Felix Torres.

Argentina’s Talleres believed they were entitled to receive $612,000 for operating expenses and taxes on Garro’s transfer to Corinthians, but the Brazilian club disputed the obligation to cover the amount. The disagreement caused Garro (pictured) to take a long time to settle in at Corinthians.

When Talleres filed a legal complaint with FIFA, the club also demanded payment of $3 million, corresponding to the instalments that were still due under the contract. FIFA has ordered Corinthians to pay $3.6 million and interest of 18% per year from January 2024 until the payment date. The Brazilian club also has to pay compensation of $722,400.

Mexico’s Santos Laguna said that Corinthians had only paid a first instalment of $2 million from a $6.5 million transfer fee when Torres moved to Sao Paulo.

FIFA again came down hard on Corinthians, ordering the club to pay the remaining $4.5 million as well as interest of 18% per year and a penalty of $675,000. FIFA’s players’ status chamber upheld the general legal principle ‘pacta sunt servanda’ (agreements must be met).

FIFA’s decisions dated back to September and October of 2024, but football’s governing body only published the decision on its website earlier this week.

The Sao Paulo giants have appealed both cases to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS). In separate statements, Corinthians maintain that they have not done anything wrong.
