February 26 – Tunisia’s Wadie Jary remains listed as a member of FIFA’s member associations committee even though he was convicted of corruption and handed a four-year prison sentence.
Last week, the former president of the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) was sentenced to four years in prison because of an “unlawful contract between the FTF and a technical director” during his reign, but Wary remains listed as a member of FIFA’s member associations committee on the global governing body’s website.
Headed by Sonia Fulford, a FIFA Council member, the associations committee “shall deal with relations between FIFA and its Members and draw up proposals for optimum cooperation. The committee shall also monitor the evolution of the Statutes and regulations of FIFA, the Confederations and Members.”
Last year, Mamoutou Touré, a FIFA Council member from Mali, dailled into a meeting of the world federation’s highest body from prison, according to The Times.
The FA president of Mali will however not seek reelection to the Council. In his resignation letter, Touré stated: “These 17 months of detention, without the possibility of provisional release, have prevented me from fully engaging in my responsibilities and preparing for the renewal of my mandate within the FIFA Council.”
On FIFA’s website, Touré remains listed as a Council member.
Jary’s lawyers confirmed that they will appeal the conviction. FIFA failed to reply to a request for comment.
