March 10 – Following in the steps of ‘All or Nothing’, Amazon Prime has just released ‘For the Win: NWSL’, the first docuseries devoted to the National Women’s Soccer League, and the story of the 2024 play-offs.
The series will offer a full immersive experience and go behind-the-scenes as the post-season unfolded.
As well as the play-offs, the theme of this first series is a changing of the guard. USWNT superstars, Alex Morgan, Kelly O’Hara, and Becky Sauerbrunn, all retired during the 2024 season making way for a new generation. Barbra Banda, Croix Collette Bethune, and Trinity Rodman, daughter of NBA maverick, Dennis Rodman are all featured.
The 4-part series aims to satisfy long-term fans of the league, however, it is more geared towards viewers who may be newbies to women’s professional soccer.
Last Tuesday at the Paley Center for Media in New York City, NWSL commissioner, Jessica Berman said reaching new fans is “the theme of 2025”.
“You’re going to see a lot of initiatives to give not just our current core fans but future fans, too, an opportunity to discover us,” Berman said during a Q&A moderated by former NFL quarterback Eli Manning, a Gotham FC minority owner, with Gotham defender Nealy Martin and the film’s director, Marie Margolius.
“That was the whole strategy behind our media deal, and that is going to be what you’re going to see manifest throughout this year, which is to see the NWSL and our players showing up in unsuspecting places.”
The league had been pitched by a variety of production companies before settling with Words + Pictures. Prime Video then agreed to carry the series.
“Telling (players’) stories, both on and off the pitch, is the best way for us to make sure everybody knows who we are,” Berman said, “and hopefully then drive them towards watching the games, because that’s how we’re going to grow the business and get these players paid what they’re worth.”
‘For the Win: NWSL’ features club rivalries, rising stars, retirements, and what’s next for the league as it moves into 2025.
