Flamengo add Carioca to Super Cup in winning start to 2025

March 17 – Brazilian giants Flamengo have won the Rio de Janeiro state championship, edging past crosstown rivals Fluminense 2-1 over two legs.

On Sunday, the two rivals played out a goalless draw at the Maracana after Flamengo had won the first leg 2-1 with goals from Wesley Franca and Olavio. It’s the 39th time that Flamengo have claimed the Carioca championship, allowing it local bragging rights for the rest of the year.

It’s the third title in six months for new manager Filipe Luis, who succeeded former Brazil manager Tite at the helm. He won the Brazilian Cup in 2024 and the Super Cup at the start of 2025.

“It’s a lot of work. You mentioned the achievements we’ve had, Flamengo gives you that, the ability to compete. It doesn’t guarantee winning, but it does guarantee that you’ll compete. I’m proud of the work my players have done, of the effort they’ve put in along the way. I’m a very ambitious guy, I want more,” said Luis.

“The Carioca is a traditional, historic championship, it has its charms… Flamengo enters to win any tournament, it will never play to give up. We managed to give playing time, we made it a pre-season. There were many classic matches, which is very tiring. When you win a classic, you never appreciate it, there is always a catch. That makes me sad.”

With a deep squad, Flamengo will be among the favourites to win the domestic league which the Rio club will kick off against Internacional on March 29. At the Club World Cup in the summer, Flamengo are drawn with Chelsea, Esperance de Tunis and Leon in Group D.
