March 28 – UEFA has joined forces with SolarPower Europe to accelerate the adoption of solar energy in football, aiming to cut the sport’s carbon footprint while offering long-term financial sustainability to clubs and associations. The partnership, formalised through a cooperation agreement, will focus on expanding solar power usage across European football, supporting clubs and national associations in securing power purchase agreements (PPAs) for stable, long-term renewable energy supply, and hosting a webinar in 2025 to educate football stakeholders on solar energy and storage solutions.
With stadiums and training facilities consuming vast amounts of electricity, transitioning to solar power presents a cost-effective and sustainable solution for the football industry. UEFA’s initiative follows its 2030 ‘Strength Through Unity’ sustainability roadmap, which prioritises emissions reduction and energy efficiency.
Several clubs, including Ajax, Bayern Munich, and Forest Green Rovers, have already integrated solar energy into their operations. UEFA’s partnership with SolarPower Europe aims to scale up these efforts, making solar power more accessible to clubs of all sizes and driving European football towards a cleaner energy future.
Michele Uva, UEFA’s Director of Social & Environmental Sustainability, said: “We aim to enhance sustainable football infrastructure by advancing renewable energy implementation and best practices. This partnership brings valuable expertise to a constantly evolving area of our work.”
Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, added: “Solar and football already energise communities and nations across Europe – they’re a perfect match. We’re proud to take a natural step in working with UEFA to support their 2030 sustainability goals.”
