March 31 – Spain’s National Women’s Team has conquered the world, winning the most recent Women’s World Cup (WWC), however, off-field, non-sporting scandals have battered the reputation of the Federation. With the announcement of a bid for WWC 2035, the Federation is hoping to restore the image of the organisation.
Joining Spain in the bid will be their co-hosts of the 2030 World Cup, Portugal and Morocco.
“There is no better way to raise the profile of women’s sport than by participating in the most important sporting event in the world, a FIFA World Cup. We are currently working on it,” RFEF president Rafael Louzan said on the sidelines of a conference at the University of Madrid.
Women’s football in Spain received a major black eye with the behaviour of former president, Luis Rubiales, who was forced to resign in disgrace in September 2023 after forcibly kissing Spanish star, Jenni Hermoso, on the lips during Las Sonadoras’s trophy celebration in Australia.
Rubiales, was followed in the presidential hot seat by, Pedro Rocha, who himself was suspended for overstepping his duties after arriving on an interim basis.
Women’s football in Spain has gone from strength to strength in the last decade and the national team heads to Switzerland for this summer’s Euros as heavy favourites. In the domestic game, Barcelona is considered the gold standard of the club game, and Spain is looking to build on the growth of the game by co-hosting the WWC.
