April 2 – As the world’s most famous player, Lionel Messi requires protection on and off the pitch, however Major League Soccer (MLS) has decided to take full control of his safety after banning his bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, from the touchline of Inter Miami matches.
Cheuko has become something of an internet and social media sensation as he races on to the pitch to intercept any potential pitch invaders from approaching the Argentine superstar.
“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” the bodyguard told Spanish media.
“I was in Europe for seven years, working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch.
“I came to the USA and in just 20 months, 16 people have already done so. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.”
The league has said that Cheuko will still be allowed to be close to his client but only in the locker rooms and mixed zones.
According to unverified rumours, Cheuko was supposedly a Navy SEAL, and has served in the Middle East, most notably in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also had a short spell as a Mixed Martial Arts fighter.
His journey with Messi began during the footballer’s time in Paris Saint-Germain. Thereafter, he was reportedly recommended to Inter Miami president David Beckham after Messi’s arrival in MLS.
Cheuko believes that MLS should rather think of a more collaborative solution to the problem, keeping all concerned parties in mind.
Cheuko said he loves MLS and Concacaf, but added that they need to “work together”.
Highlighting his “wealth of experience in Europe,” he said that he does understand their side (MLS), but thinks “we could do better.”
