Bulgaria’s Svetkavitsa Targovishte fail to pay players for fourth straight month

April 8 – Bulgarian Third Division club Svetkavitsa Targovishte have announced that the team’s players have not received salaries for the past four months.

The club’s hierachy lays blame at the door of the Targovishte Municipality which has yet to vote on the club’s budget for 2025. Svetkavitsa Targovishte, like most teams in the Bulgarian Third League, are supported primarily by local municipalities, which provide a certain budget on an annual basis.

The club wrote on their official website that “Targovishte Municipality does not care at all about what is happening to the football club, and this is a threat to the team’s closure.”

“Svetkavitsa Targovishte’s players have not received salaries for four months, and the municipal budget has not yet been voted on. This is expected to happen at the end of April, but even if the financial framework is approved, the money will be transferred to the club’s accounts at the earliest in May, when the championship will end.”

“The municipality has been neglecting football in the city for a long time and something needs to change if Targovishte does not want to be left without a men’s football team. Although these have been the signals for a long time, against the background of the disinterest of the mayor and his subordinates, who constantly dismiss the topic with dozens of excuses.

“Unlike the activities of other neighboring municipalities, where the desire for football is visible, and the money for sports has already been voted and is many times greater than that in Svetkavitsa.

“The team still manages to stay above the relegation zone in the standings, but in seven games in the spring, the players have already worn the jersey without money and played only with heart and muscles.

“The coaching staff of Svetkavitsa would like to express sincere gratitude to the team’s players for their desire and professionalism,” the statement concluded.
