April 11 – Colombia’s Ramón Jesurún has retained his seat on the FIFA Council. At Thursday’s 80th Conmebol Congress, Jesurún was re-elected unopposed to serve another term on the FIFA Council, the highest decision-making body of the world federation.
“I thank you for the confidence in me to continue representing Conmebol and South American on the FIFA Council,” said Jesurun (pictured) following his election.
Alongside Ednaldo Rodrigues of Brazil, Ignacio Alonso of Uruguay and Mario Sol Munoz of Ecuador, Jesurún is one of four South Americans to sit on the FIFA Council. Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez serves as a vice-president.
Members of the Council receive an annual net compensation of $250,000 while FIFA Council Vice-Presidents, who are also confederation presidents, are entitled to $300,000.
The Colombian however is not without controversy. Last year, Jesurún and his son, Ramon Jamil Jesurún, were arrested at the final of the Copa America in Miami on charges of battery involving an official or an employee. The final was marred by crowd chaos which dangerous scenes outside the stadium. Kick-off was delayed by 80 minutes. Prosecutors later dropped the charges against Jesurún.
In 2020 Jesurún, the president of the Colombia Football Federation, was fined $83,000 for his involvement in World Cup qualifying ticket scam. A Colombian business regulation agency imposed a $4.6 million fine on the federation after a two-year investigation that revealed the sale of tickets at inflated prices.
