April 11 – Mohamed Salah has signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool, ending months of speculation over his future and securing the club’s top scorer through 2027 in a deal reportedly worth £375,000 per week.
The agreement sees Liverpool break from their longstanding policy under Fenway Sports Group (FSG) of not extending contracts for players over the age of 30. At 32, Salah becomes a rare exception – and a significant one – as the club looks to maintain its competitive edge while navigating an evolving squad.
The Egyptian’s renewal follows a season of uncertainty, where he gave mixed signals about his future. In November, Salah admitted he was “more out than in”, as interest from Saudi Arabia intensified. This wasn’t the first time Saudis had coming knocking – Al-Ittihad made a £150 million bid in 2023, swiftly turned down by Liverpool. That interest never faded, with Saudi clubs monitoring the situation closely ahead of the expiry of his previous contract this summer.
In the end, Liverpool held firm – and Salah stayed.
“Of course I’m very excited,” he said following the announcement. “I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football.”
The club leaned into Salah’s previous ambiguity by captioning their announcement “more in than out”, accompanied by images of the forward seated on a throne at Anfield – a nod to his status as the Egyptian King.
Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas, had pushed for a longer-term deal, but FSG settled on a two-year extension. Despite that compromise, the agreement is seen as a major win for the club, especially as Salah continues to perform at elite levels. He remains Liverpool’s third all-time top scorer, with 243 goals in 394 appearances and is having a career-best season with 27 goals and 17 assists in the Premier League with seven games still to play.
As Liverpool prepares for its second season under head coach Arne Slot, Salah’s commitment offers both continuity and leadership. He reportedly topped the club’s pre-season fitness tests last summer and remains central to their plans as they pursue another Premier League title.
Liverpool are also progressing talks with captain Virgil van Dijk, who has hinted twice in the past week that his own renewal could be close. The Dutch defender, like Salah, is out of contract in a matter of months, and negotiations are understood to be moving in a positive direction toward a two-year extension, likely to be announced this weekend.
