April 22 – One the world’s greatest ever players, Luka Modrić, has joined English Championship club Swansea City as an investor and co-owner.
Croatia’s talisman and Real Madrid legend Modrić has won six Champions Leagues, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups, and five Spanish Super Cups with Real.
He has also won the The Best FIFA Men’s Player award, The Ballon d’Or, and played in the 2018 World Cup Final. He is Croatia’s most capped player having played 186 times for his country since his senior debut in 2006. He is now 39 years old and still going strong, having played 45 times for Real Madrid this season.
No value has been given for how much Modrić paid for his stake in Swansea, which is reportedly 5%.
Modrić is unlikelt to play for the club in the near term as he is committed to Real Madrid and will likely be at the 2026 World Cup with Croatia. He is expected to help with player recruitment though.
What he does bring to the Welsh club immediately is a star power that could commercially boost the club both on the field in terms of players it can attract, and off the field in building an international fanbase.
Modrić has 37 million followers on Instagram and is ranked 137th worldwide amongst Instagram influencers. He has 23 million Facebo0k followers and nearly 6 million on X.
He is the kind of social media and football power house that Swansea’s owners US owners Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen were looking for to make a step change in the club’s profile.
“This is an exciting opportunity. Swansea has a strong identity, an incredible fanbase, and the ambition to compete at the highest level. Playing at the highest level, I believe I can provide my experience to the club. My goal is to support the club’s growth in a positive way and to help to build an exciting future,” said Modric.
Swansea currently lie in 11th place in the Championship with two games to play, having won their last five matches on the bounce. A Modric-fuelled challenge for the Premier League, from which Swansea were relegated from in 2018, could be on the cards for next season.
