November 30 – Poland’s Football Association (PZPN) has sacked secretary general Zdzislaw Krecina over a corruption scandal that could still bring down the organisation’s head, Grzegorz Lato.
The country’s Sports Minister Joanna Mucha had instigated an investigation into allegations that the pair had been involved in corruption relating to the construction of the PZPN’s new headquarters, after secret recordings were passed onto her.
Mucha had called on both Krecina and Lato to resign, but the former Poland international forward is determined to stay on despite the scandal.
Following a meeting to discuss the issue, the PZPN released a statement confirming Krecina’s sacking from his post.
This is the latest in a series of corruption scandals the organisation has been involved in, and the current investigation is a blow to the country, which is co-hosting next summer’s European Championships with Ukraine.
A match fixing investigation launched five years ago led to the arrest of a number of players, coaches and officials, including members of the PZPN.
The leader of Poland’s opposition party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, went even further, calling for a new organisation to be set up and the PZPN disbanded, according to the Polish Press Agency, and members of the country’s Parliament have called for Lato’s head.
