July 17 – African football has fallen victim to yet another stadium disaster after a wall collapsed in Senegal on Saturday, killing eight people and injuring between 60-90 according to conflicting news reports.
The wall fell in at the league cup final between local rivals Union Sportive Ouakam at the Demba Diop stadium in the capital Dakar.
After 90 minutes, with the game deadlocked at 1-1, Mbour scored, prompting angry Ouakam fans to start hurling missiles at opposition supporters.
Police responded by using tear gas before a stampede led to the wall collapsing as fans attempted to flee the stadium.
Sports minister Matar Ba pledged “strong measures so that such an event will never be repeated in Senegal.” Meanwhile the country has suspended all sporting and cultural events for the rest of the month.
