July 20 – Cameroon has been quick to re-assure African football leaders that it is fully capable of staging the 2019 African Cup of Nations with the necessary government backing.
Both Morocco and Algeria have made soundings in recent days about taking over hosting the tournament if Cameroon’s infrastructure is found wanting, especially if 2019 ends up being the first AFCON to be expanded from 16 to 24 teams.
The north African neighbours are keen to pounce – potentially sharing hosting – but Cameroon’s Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Pierre Ismaël Bidoung Mkpatt says there are no problems about organisation and that he has had no indication that his country could be stripped of hosting rights by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“I would like to reassure the national and international opinion that the government is fully committed to fulfilling the CAF’s specifications,” he told Africa News.
“To date, no CAF mission has reported any delay in preparations for CAN 2019.”
