Spanish regions call for Villar to stand down, he demands payment of his RFEF wages

August 30 – Spain’s 19 regional federations and the government’s council for sport (CSD) have unanimously called for the resignation of Spanish FA (RFEF) president Angel Maria Villar (pictured), the former FIFA and UEFA powerbroker, following an emergency meeting.

The career of Villar, one of the last remaining members of football’s political old guard, effectively came to an end when the seemingly untouchable lawyer resigned as vice-president of FIFA and UEFA after being arrested on charges of improper management, misappropriation of funds, corruption and falsifying documents..

Villar, who denies all the allegations against him, was suspended for a year but there is now growing pressure on him to step down for good. If that doesn’t happen, a vote of no confidence could take place in November.

“There has been unanimity in that the best solution would be the resignation of Villar,” said Secretary of State for sport, José Ramón Lete. “That would allow the call for elections.”

Meanwhile reports in Spain say Villar has demanded to continue being paid by the RFEF while he fights his case in the same way he claims Michel Platini was paid by UEFA until permanently standing down as president.
