December 27 – Gabon has completed construction of two new stadiums in Libreville and Franceville for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, which gets underway on January 21, a Gabonese member of the Organising Committee told insideworldfootball.
Gabon had hosted a game against Brazil in Libreville at the Sino-Gabonese Friendship last month which was delayed by a lighting failure but all issues have now been ironed out, it is claimed.
Speaking to insideworldfootball, Louis Claude Moundzieoud, the Organising Committee of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea 2012 communications chief said: “We have built two new stadia, one in Libreville and one in Franceville.
“Also we built a new training ground complex.
“All are ready – all the stadia are ready, the hotels for the team and media.
“Our country is ready to host the African Cup of Nations.
“For our country the competition is important, it will give the opportunity to show the world that our country can organise a competition with a number of international competitors.”
The stadium in Libreville can hold 40,000 spectators and the Franceville venue 25,000.
Moundzieoud confirmed to insideworldfootball that transport links between the two stadia as well as between the two host countries had been completed.
It will be the first time either Gabon or Equatorial Guinea host the African Cup of Nations in the tournament’s 54-year history.
