January 3 – The future of David Beckham (pictured) was back on hold today as reports said the former England captain would not be extending his distinguished career by joining Qatar-backed French club Paris St Germain.

Beckham, 36, had been widely linked with a move to the French capital as he winds down his playing days, but it now appears he is available for any other club seeking his experience, or alternatively could extend his spell with Los Angeles Galaxy who have offered him a one-year rolling deal.

“It’s over,” PSG sporting director Leonardo told L’Équipe in France.

“It’s a shame.

“But the welfare of his family in LA, the wish not to change everything in his life, weighed heavily.”

Beckham has been weighing up his options since helping LA Galaxy win the MLS Cup, the most prestigious football competition in the United States.

The smart money was on him moving to the Parc des Princes to play for a revitalised PSG, domestically if not in Europe.

But it may be his surprise u-turn is connected with the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as the club’s new coach who, according to reports, is not keen on the former Manchester United and Real Madrid super star.

According to L’Équipe, Ancelotti is more interested in bringing Kaká to Paris despite the official line that uprooting his family yet again was too great a concern for Beckham.

Whatever he decides, Beckham will certainly want to play some kind of competitive football to give him a chance of being selected for Team GB at this year’s London Olympics.

Staying with Galaxy could potentially give him that chance.
