January 16 – A man has been arrested and is facing charges as the result of an investigation into racist abuse aimed at Rangers players Kyle Bartley (pictured) and Maurice Edu.

Bartley and Edu had the comments directed at them, and both tweeted their disappointment at the actions of the individual responsible.

Bartley, on loan from Arsenal, said it was “disappointing that in 2012 things like this are still happening”, adding that he hoped “the police will take action”.

Meanwhile, United States international Edu responded to a message from fellow American Jozy Altidore by saying it was a “sad day when that’s what people are tweeting”.

Inverness Caledon forward Grégory Tadé was also racially abused earlier this month, whilst south of the border Liverpool’s Luis Suárez is serving an eight game suspension for allegedly racially abusing Patrice Evra.

England captain John Terry is also awaiting the result of a police investigation into allegations that he racially abused QPR’s Anton Ferdinand in a game earlier this season.

A Rangers spokesman told STV: “These comments are disgraceful and we have notified the police who are now investigating the matter.

“The club will assist with all enquiries.”

Strathclyde Police have confirmed an investigation is underway and a 41-year-old is currently being held.
