January 18 – David Beckham has finally ended speculation about him returning to Europe by signing a new two-year deal to remain at LA Galaxy in the United States.
The former England captain, 36, had been due to join Qatar-backed Paris St Germain but when talks broke down he decided to stay at the side he joined in 2007 from Real Madrid.
“This was an important decision for me,” Beckham said in a statement.
“I had many offers from clubs from around the world, however, I’m still passionate about playing in America and winning trophies with the Galaxy.”
Beckham steered Galaxy to the MLS title last season, meaning he has won a major trophy with each of the clubs he has permanently signed for.
His contract expired on December 31 and after the PSG deal collapsed he was linked with a number of other clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur.
But it now looks like he will finish his career in the United States.
“I’ve seen first hand how popular soccer is now in the States and I’m as committed as ever to growing the game here,” Beckham said.
He has one other driving ambition too.
The former Manchester United midfielder, one of the game’s most iconic figures on and off the field, still wants to compete for Team GB in the London Olympics and it is understood there is a clause in his contract allowing him to do so.
