January 5 – The failure of the Ivory Coast to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Russia continues to have a knock-on effect off the field with a raft of clubs calling for an extraordinary general meeting of the national federation and the removal its president Augustin Sidy Diallo.
The Ivorian Football Federation (IFF) says it has received an official request for an egm from 38 of the country’s 76 clubs as well as four “IFF member interest groups”, all of whom attribute the responsibility for the team’s failure to Diallo.
“We have seen the regression of our football, and we criticize Sidy Diallo for his lack of vision,” one of the protesters, Salif Bictogo, president of the Stella Club Adjamé, told AFP. “We ask for his resignation.”
Ivory Coast has a proud tradition of World Cup qualification having made it to the last three final tournaments. The country also won the CAF Cup of Nations in 2015.
