De Maria to step down at Mexican federation, de Luisa to step up

Decio de Maria

March 5 – Mexico’s football federation (FMF) president Decio de Maria (pictured) has resigned and will leave his post after the 2018 World Cup. Yon de Luisa will take his place.

De Maria, was previously chief executive of Liga MX before taking over the top job at the FMF in 2015 from long-time president Justino Compean. He will still be head of his federation when the 2026 vote takes place in Moscow just before the world cup kicks off.

De Luisa has been the rising star in Mexican football administration. He is currently Mexico’s bid director for the 2026 World Cup, a role he will keep after assuming the FMF presidency.

Like Compean before him, De Luisa has worked for media giant Televisa Deportes  where he was vice president for special and sporting events. The 46-year-old was also president of the organising committee for the 2011 Under-17 World Cup, as well as fulfilling different director roles at Liga MX Club America.

Two of the three United 2026 federation bosses will now be relinquishing their roles. Last month Sunil Gulati was succeeded as president of the USSF by Carlos Cordeiro. However, bith their successors were already members of the United 2026 bid teams.
