February 29 – UEFA President Michel Platini (pictured) is set to miss this Saturday’s (March 3) crucial meeting of football’s lawmakers for personal reasons.
UEFA sources have confirmed that Platini will not be present at the International Football Association Board (IFAB) session because of a family bereavement.
Part of the IFAB discussions will focus on whether or not to introduce goal-line technology, an idea fiercely opposed by Platini who recently described it as “nonsense”.
Platini instead favours the ongoing experiment of additional referees’ assistants, also on Saturday’s agenda in Bagshot, England.
The IFAB comprises FIFA and the four British national associations represented by their general secretaries.
It is understood none of the eight companies who have been involved in the testing process for goal-line technology will be present.
Instead the Swiss-based testing institute EMPA will report the findings of the first test phase held between November and December last year – and recommend which companies should be shortlisted for further testing.
