March 2 – FIFA has extended a broadcasting rights agreement with Brazilian broadcaster Globo for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, in Russia and Qatar respectively.
The deal covers cable, satellite and terrestrial television coverage, as well as online and mobile platforms in Brazil, who host the 2014 World Cup for which Globo also have broadcast rights.
The agreement builds on broadcast deals struck by FIFA with Al-Jazeera covering the Middle East and North Africa and with Fox and Telemundo for the United States’ English and Spanish rights respectively.
Jérôme Valcke, FIFA’s general secretary, said: “Globo’s strength in distribution across such a vast territory as Brazil ensures the tournament can be followed by as many people as possible.
“This was the determining factor in our decision to extend the agreement with Globo.”
A FIFA broadcasting partner since 1970, Globo is Brazil’s largest media company.
Their chief executive Roberto Irineu Marinho was delighted with the new deal.
“For more than 40 years, FIFA and Globo have developed a very fruitful partnership which has led to significant rewards for both of us,” he said.
“During all these years, FIFA has succeeded in making football the most popular sport with a huge audience all over the world and Globo is very proud of being part of it.
“The most important thing to Globo is to allow our viewers to be part of the tournaments as if they were on the pitch themselves.
“For that reason, we are proud to extend this partnership.”
