March 14 – The three-way co-operation between Canada, Mexico and the US in the bid for the 2026 World Cup, is seeing new alliances formed at the top end of club football in their countries. Liga MX and Major League Soccer have agreed a long-term partnership that will see new club competition between the countries.
The agreement will see the creation of an annual Campeones Cup between the champions of the MLS (which has three Canadian teams – Toronto FC, Montreal Impact, Vancouver Whitecaps – in its number) and Liga MX.
The first Campeones Cup will be played September 19 at Toronto’s BMO Field. Toronto FC will play either 2017 Apertura champion Tigres UANL or the winner of the current 2018 Clausura Liga MX season.
The new alliance also sees two new match initiatives. A future MLS All-Star Game (presented by Target) will feature players in both leagues, while the annual MLS Homegrown Game (presented by Energizer) will now have a Liga MX Under-20 club team as the annual opponent.
