March 5 – UEFA are slashing ticket prices for this season’s Champions League final in Munich following a barrage of criticism about the expense of watching last year’s showpiece event for grassroots fans.
UEFA say the cheapest price for the Allianz Arena will be €70 (£58/$92), roughly half the amount some fans had to fork out at Wembley last May to watch Manchester United take on victors Barcelona.
UEFA boss Michel Platini apologised for the 2011 pricing structure saying it was a “mistake” and promised to do something about it this time.
The cheapest category four tickets, 13,000 of which will be available in Munich, will cost €70 (£58/$92).
UEFA said the new prices had been finalised in consultation with Football Supporters Europe.
Altogether, 35,000 tickets will be distributed equally between the two clubs who reach the final, with the remaining 20,500 tickets for the Allianz Arena to be distributed between the local organising committee, UEFA’s 53 member associations and commercial and broadcast partners.
In total 42,000 tickets will be available to the public for the 62,500-capacity stadium.
In 2011, the cost of one adult and one child buying a two-ticket category two youth package was €406 (£338/$536), but this has now been slashed to €140 (£117/$185) at current exchange rates.
UEFA will make 400 of these packages available, 200 for general sale with a further 100 going to each of the finalists.
