May 1 – Chivas’ victory over Toronto FC to win the club’s first Concacaf title and qualify for their Club World Cup later in the year, was the 13th consecutive title for Mexican teams in the confederation’s premier club competition.
While the Guadelajara club were triumphing on the field, leading sponsor Scotiabank were renewing their vows off it with Concacaf in an early extension of their partnership.
Scotiabank have been something of a saviour for Concacaf. Having signed the confederation’s biggest ever sponsorship literally a month before the biggest ever corruption crisis hit the confederation in 2015, the bank would have been forgiven for backpeddling fast.
Instead they remained true to their word and focus on building in the Mexican market, and stuck with the sponsorship and the Concacaf Champions League in particular – a credit to their faith in football and the strength of the Concacaf officials left behind battling to keep the deals in place and competitions being played.
The extension will take Scotiabank through to the end of 2022, and covers all Concacaf properties including the title sponsorship of the Champions League, the Scotiabank Concacaf League, the Scotiabank Concacaf Under-13 Champions League, the newly launched Concacaf Nations League, as well as the Concacaf Women’s Championship.
“We are proud that this important partnership will continue for many years ahead, and thank Scotiabank for their continued commitment and support of Concacaf’s mission to develop the game across the region, as well as the firm trust and belief in football across Concacaf embodied in this agreement,” said Concacaf President Victor Montagliani.
Scotiabank will also continue its involvement with the confederation’s blue riband national team event the Gold Cup – played every two years and to be expanded from 12 to 16 teams in its next edition in 2019.
“Soccer is a passion we share with our employees and customers across the region. What is important to them is important to us as an organization. We will stay on the ground with our customers involved in what they enjoy, promoting organized sports to build teamwork and stronger communities”, added Ivan Lomeli, Deputy General Director for Scotiabank in Mexico.
No figure was announced for the Scotiabank sponsorship.
