May 4 – The Belgian FA (KBVB) has become the second national federation to announce they will have a national eSports team – the Belgian eDevils – to play on the EA Sports FIFA game platform.
Following on from the trend of clubs looking to the eSports gaming market to hire professional players for their club brands and to compete under their club name, national teams could soon be doing the same, perhaps even creating their own World Cup.
French football’s governing body, the Federation Française de Football (FFF), were the first national federation to launch their own eSports team in February. The eLigue1 eSports league in France has been a significant success and is now in its second season with sponsors and a growing fan interaction.
This Sunday, May 6, the Belgians are hosting an invitational tournament to take place on FIFA 18 with 16 players placed in to groups at the Belgian Football Center Tubize.
The four that are left at the end of the tournament will be in the final team to play the national teams opening matches.
Their first international match will be against the French team eFoot composed of Maestro, RocKy, DaXe and Herozia on May 12 at 5pm, streamed on both YouTube and Facebook.
