March 27 – The composition of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the game’s lawmaking body comprising FIFA and the four British Home Associations, was the notable topic of discussion when FIFA’s Strategic Committee met at the start of a week-long series of key sessions ahead of Thursday’s (March 29) Executive Committee meeting.

Chaired by FIFA President Sepp Blatter (pictured front centre), among those attending were the presidents of all six FIFA confederations.

While the international match calendar, insurance of players and third-party ownership were all on the agenda, the very fact that FIFA discussed the make-up of IFAB was interesting in itself.

There are growing concerns among the British federations that their historic position as joint governors of IFAB may be under threat as part of the reforms being undertaken by FIFA.

Last week Alex Horne, general secretary of the English Football Association (FA), said it was vital that the IFAB remained in its current format and conceded that, as a quid pro quo, the British associations might be willing to relinquish their long-standing nominated FIFA vice-presidency.
