Croatian cup soured by fine for ‘non-authorised beverage products’

July 6 – On the eve of their World Cup quarterfinal against the host nation, Croatia have been fined CHF70,000 for violating media and marketing rules at the tournament.

FIFA’s disciplinary authorities said Croatia team members had displayed “non-authorised beverage products” during their round of 16 win against Denmark on Sunday.

FIFA says it also warned Croatia’s federation and goalkeeper Danijel Subasic for violating rules on personal messages.

After Subasic had saved three penalties in the shootout, he revealed a T-shirt honouring a former teammate.

For years, Subasic has worn a T-shirt under his jersey bearing the picture of teammate Hrvoje Custic who died tragically in 2008 when he crashed into a concrete wall during a game. The image appears under the word ‘Forever’.

FIFA says Subasic violated equipment rules “due to the display of a personal message.”
