April 12 – A Swiss aid organisation has launched a campaign targeting FIFA for holding World Cups in countries with poor human rights records.
Solidar Suisse is making its point with a spoof online video of a Sepp Blatter impersonator gyrating to Brazilian music surrounded by several scantily clothed dancers in national dress.
Brazil hosts the tournament in 2014 and the video is Solidar Suisse’s way of alerting people to their cause of FIFA saddling countries with debt while they themselves make huge profits.
The charity cites poor labour conditions and says infrastructure work for the 2014 tournament is causing 80,000 evictions – a number it warns is expected to double.
