August 20 – The long-awaited sentencing of former Brazilian supremo Jose Maria Marin (pictured right) is scheduled for Wednesday (August 22) in Brooklyn, New York, with federal prosecutors reportedly pushing for a 10-year jail term for the 85-year-old.
Marin was convicted last December for his role in the FifaGate corruption scandal. President of the Brazilian FA (CBF) during the country’s hosting of the World Cup in 2014, he was one of the FIFA officials arrested in the May 2015 dawn raids in Zurich at the Baur au Lac hotel.
He was found guilty of six of the seven counts against him of money laundering and wire fraud conspiracy amounting to $6.5 million in connection with the award of broadcast and marketing rights.
Marin’s legal team say sentence should be for only 13 months, and include the five months he spent in a Swiss jail after first being arrested. He argues the US authorities have overstated his culpability in the alleged corruption and that his age and health warrant leniency.
Marin was found guilty at the same time as Paraguay’s Juan Angel Napout whose sentencing is expected August 29.
