Platini enters VAR debate questioning its ‘progress’, ‘justice’ and FIFA’s self-serving stats

August 29 – Still banned over that infamous ‘disloyal payment’ from Sepp Blatter, former UEFA boss Michel Platini has entered the debate over video assistant referees saying the system has done next to nothing to help the game.

Platini, whose suspension technically runs until October 2019, still vehemently denies any wrongdoing and only tends to speaks his mind publicly on subjects he feels strongly about.

VAR is close to his heart since he has always been an opponent of any kind of technology.

“VAR has not brought more justice,” Platini told l’Equipe citing its use – or lack of it – in the World Cup final between France and Croatia. “Where is progress, where is justice?”

“Where are we going to stop? Maybe tomorrow captains and goalkeepers will have headsets and coaches will be able to talk to them. That way, we will definitely kill football like we have already killed cycling and F1.”

With a hint of sour grapes Platini rejects FIFA’s statistics that showed that more than 99% of VAR decisions were correct. “I know them at FIFA, it’s their job to find statistics that work in their favour,” he said.
