Needling the Russians: Cherysev now cleared of doping allegation

September 14 – Spain’s anti-doping agency has reportedly closed its investigation into Russia and Valencia winger Denis Cheryshev for an alleged doping violation.

Cheryshev, who became an overnight sensation when scoring four goals at the World Cup, fell under suspicion after his father talked to the Russian media about an injection that his son had for an injury.

Dimitri Cheryshev told Sport Weekend that the rising star of Russian football, who plays his league football in Spain, had received an injection of “growth hormone” (HGH) which, without a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) , which can be punished with up to a four-year ban.

But Reuters quoted the Spanish Agency for Health Protection in Sport (AEPSAD) as having closed the investigation. Cheryshev has denied ever taking a banned substance.

“I have never used any prohibited substances and you don’t even have to think twice about it, “ he said during the World Cup.

The player shared a letter from the AEPSAD on his official Twitter account on Thursday which stated the case had been closed after “no signs of irregular conduct were found”.

The Russian Football Union (RFU) said at the time that the treatment the player received had been a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection which is legal.
