Summer transfer spend hits $5.44bn with Big 5 Euro leagues accounting for $4.21bn

September 14 – FIFA has completed an analysis of Big 5 league transfers in the summer 2018 window using its International Transfer Matching System (ITMS) which recorded another new record level of global transfer spending at $5.44 billion.

Big 5 clubs accounted for a massive $4.21 billion of the total, the equivalent of 77.5% of the value of the 8,401 transfers registered by FIFA in the window.

While English clubs once again topped the spending chart at $1.44 billion, the biggest increases in spending were seen from Italian clubs who were up 74.7%, and Spanish clubs who increased year-on-year spend by 42.2%.

The monetary dominance of the Big 5 is shown by less than a fifth of all international transfers being to clubs in those leagues but which account for 77.5% of all global spending on transfer fees. FIFA says this is a trendthat has been increasing over the years. Spending by the Big 5 went from being 66.3% more than the clubs of all other member associations combined in the summer of 2011, to being 244.9% more this summer.

Overall the numbers bring “total transfer fees for 2018 so far to $7.11 billion, already 11.5% more than the transfer fees for the entire year in 2017,” says FIFA.
