Orlando to host 2019 MLS All-Star game; Campeones Cup kicks off tonight in Toronto

September 19 – Major League Soccer has named Orlando as the host for the 2019 MLS All-Star Game played between a selection of the league’s top players and an international club.

‘Presented by Target’, the game will be played at the Orlando City Stadium, home of the MLS’s Orlando City Soccer Club. It will be the second time the MLS has taken its All-Star game to Orlando.

The 2018 MLS All-Star game was played in Atlanta, Georgia, against Juventus last month. The final score was 1-1 but Juve took the honours winning a penalty shoot-out 5-3.

In 2019 the match will conclude a week of activities including the MLS All-Star Concert, (previous headliners have included 2Chainz, Macklemore, X Ambassadors and Aloe Blacc), while MLS Works, the MLS’s charitable arm, will also host various community outreach events. Recent initiatives have included the creation of soccer fields for underserved communities, support of local sustainability programs and providing volunteer opportunities.

“Orlando City SC has played an important role in the rise and advancement of Major League Soccer during the past few years, and we are pleased to bring the 2019 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target to this passionate soccer market,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber.

MLS locks in Campeones Cup deals

While the 2019 All-Star game will be broadcast on Fox, Univision, the TSN and TVA family of networks, the league has also been working on securing broadcast partners for its first annual Campeones Cup, the new competition between the league champions of MLS and Liga MX, which opens tonight in Toronto between Toronto FC and Tigres UANL.

Univision, UDN and ESPN2 will broadcast the match in the US, while TSN and TVA Sports 2 will air in Canada.

The one-off challenge comes just as MLS clubs are in the midst of their own race for play-off positions.
