Kiwi FA boss quits over women’s team bullying scandal

October 16 – New Zealand FA president Deryck Shaw has resigned in the wake of a damaging bullying scandal that has rocked the women’s game.

In July, 13 players refused to play for the national team, forcing coach Andreas Heraf to step down. An independent panel later concluded that the Austrian had “bullied and harassed” players and that the NZF had failed to protect them.

The review stated that Shaw and his executive committee were too “hands off” and he immediately apologised.

Now, however, he has decided to go further by handing in his resignation.

“It is appropriate that I resign from my role as president to allow football to move forward,” he said. “This is my decision as the head of the organisation and it is the right thing to do.”

Shaw’s assistant Phil Barry will replace him until the next NZF congress in 2019.
