England legend Glenn Hoddle saved on set by rapid response sound man

October 29 – Former England manager Glenn Hoddle is “responding well” to treatment in hospital after having suffered a heart attack on Saturday.

Hoddle, a Tottenham Hotspur legend, was taken ill after appearing as a pundit for BT Sport earlier in the day on his 61st birthday.

“The condition is serious but Glenn is receiving specialist treatment and responding well,” a hospital spokesman said.

Hoddle earned 53 England caps and is considered to have been one of the best players of his generation. He won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup with Tottenham and also had spells with Monaco, Swindon and Chelsea.

He went on manage England for two and half years, taking them to the 1998 World Cup, and also managed Southampton, Tottenham and Wolverhampton Wanderers before taking up a career as a TV pundit.

Reports suggested Hoddle’s life had been saved by a BT Sport sound engineer who used CPR treatment. But Simon Daniels said he was no hero and that his first-aid training simply “kicked in”.

“I was just trying to preserve life. It didn’t really cross my mind that it was Glenn Hoddle,” said Daniels who also used a defibrillator before paramedics arrived at the BT Sport studios to take Hoddle to hospital. “I’m touched by all of the comments from Glenn’s family and those in the football and broadcasting world.”
