AC Milan and Inter agree plan to work toward new shared stadium

November 14 – AC Milan and Internazionale, bitter rivals who share the same San Siro stadium, have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding underwriting their willingness to work together towards the construction of a new shared stadium.

Both clubs are under relatively new ownership – AC Milan by Americans and Inter by Chinese – who both recognise the need to either renovate or replace the San Siro and its aging infrastructure, in order to improve match day revenue potential.

Continuing to share the stadium is the most viable option for both clubs. AC Milan have played at the San Siro since 1926, Inter joined them in 1947.

Italian stadia have generally missed the redevelopment cycle seen across the other Big 5 European leagues in recent year. Juventus are the exception and have recently moved into their new stadium and are reaping the financial benefits – Juve are the club both Milan team are striving to emulate.

In a statement AC Milan talked about improving the match day experience for fans in a modern, state-of-the-art stadium.

The AC Milan statement said: “The Clubs believe that a shared stadium will serve in the best interests of all stakeholders from a financial, administrative and technical perspective.”

“We are evaluating several possible options, including a complete renovation of the existing San Siro Stadium. A joint task-force to analyse all options accordingly has also been re-established.

“The Clubs aim to conclude an initial evaluation phase by the end of the year, in order to commence the technical and administrative activities required to deliver a modern stadium to their fans in the shortest possible timeframe.”
