November 21 – UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has admitted that “weak” aspects of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules are potentially allowing clubs to exploit loopholes and says the system will be tightened up.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain continue to face allegations that they circumvented FFP spending rules with LaLiga president Javier Tebas calling on UEFA to act decisively by throwing them out of Europe.
Tebas has been openly critical about UEFA’s handling of the situation saying it was “very important that UEFA does something real about it. You have to punish those teams.”
“Forcing them to sit out a year of the Champions League would send a message that these rules must be taken seriously.”
Ceferin is not prepared to specifically address Manchester City and PSG but told the BBC: “For any club the rules have to be strong and clear. We will act by the book, by the regulations.
“We know that we have to modernise. We acknowledge the rules might be weak in certain points. We know we have to check the rules and regulations all the time. We know that the situation in the football market is changing all the time. So that’s also part of our thinking for the future – do we have to do something about the regulations to be more robust? Yes.”
