November 27 – The Asian Football Confederation Executive Committee has pledged its support to the Palestine Football Association (PFA) after the latest interference in their football jurisdiction by Israeli military forces.

At its meeting in Oman on the eve of the AFC Annual Awards, the Executive Committee condemned the interference, which it did not detail, “in the strongest terms” and has proposed an urgent task force to address the situation.

“We will discuss with FIFA to set up a task force to address this issue immediately,” said AFC president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa. “It will be an operational task force with the general secretaries of FIFA, AFC, UEFA, PFA and Israeli FA as members to meet and propose a solution.

“We hope something good will come out of this Task Force to support our friends in PFA. Our commitment in supporting the PFA position is total.”

The Executive Committee did not take a firm stand one way or the other on the idea of two Bahraini clubs playing in the Saudi Arabian league, deciding to forward the request of the Bahrain FA to FIFA.

The Local Organising Committee of the Asian Cup in the UAE in January were also thanked for their preparation for what will be a ground-breaking competition given the use of video assistant referees for the first time.

“Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has been approved as proposed by the AFC Referees Committee from the quarter final stage of the Asian Cup with the support of FIFA and IFAB,” said a statement “This tournament will showcase the growing development of Asian football and our ability to organise top level competitions.”
