December 28 – A New York rabbi says he has been asked by Qatar for advice on how to plan for Jewish fans at the 2022 World Cup, the first to be held in a predominantly Muslim country.

Although Qatar and Israel do not have official diplomatic relations, Rabbi Marc Schneier told Bloomberg News that he was asked by Hassan Al-Thawadi, secretary-general of the organizing committee , to advise him on how to accommodate Jewish visitors.

Schneier said he and Al-Thawadi “have been in conversation for the last several months about certain ideas and initiatives he would like to implement to welcome and accommodate the many Jewish visitors they are anticipating at the World Cup.”

Bringing in kosher food was among those initiatives.

Last year Schneier presented Al Thawadi with the Global Muslim-Jewish Award on behalf of his Foundation for Ethnic Understanding. The charity seeks to strengthen ties between Muslims and Jews.
