January 2 – Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has taken control of Spanish lower-league club FC Andorra for an undisclosed sum.
The acquisition of the club that plays in the First Regional Catalan Division (level 5 in Spanish football) was made via Pique’s Kosmos investment group. FC Andorra is granted a special dispensation to play in the Spanish leagues and has previously spent 14 seasons in Spain’s third tier.
“The General Assembly of FC Andorra has unanimously approved the transmission of its assets in favour of an Andorran company jointly managed by different investors, including Kosmos,” said a company’s statement.
“Kosmos welcomes the decision made by the club. The company adds this project to its global portfolio linked to sports, media and entertainment ventures.”
Kosmos’ recently secured the rights to a revamped Davis Cup (tennis), turning it into a season-ending tournament held in one venue (Madrid next year) as opposed to the current format which spreads national team matches out over months in different countries.
Pique has also invested in the eFootballPro esports league that is played by clubs (including Barcelona) on Konami’s PES gaming platform.
