June 21 – Debt-ridden Scottish giants Rangers have denied a report that they plan to re-emerge as an English club by taking over third-tier team Bury.
Rangers have been plunged into terminal crisis and despite having new owners it remains uncertain whether they will be allowed to play as a new club in the Scottish Premier League (SPL) with a vote taking place next month whether to readmit the 54-times champions.
Rangers need the backing of seven of the 12 SPL clubs to maintain their status.
Most reports suggest they could drop one division and start life in their new guise in the Scottish First Division rather than having to begin from the bottom rung in the Third Division.
But another suggestion is that they have opted to try and become an English club by buying Bury on the outskirts of Manchester.
“Rangers have not approached Bury and our focus is on securing our status in the Scottish League structure,” a spokesman for the Glasgow club said in response to a report in The Sun newspaper.
Bury chairman Brian Fenton also dismissed the reports.
“Every football club is looking for investment and we wouldn’t turn anyone away if they were realistic investors,” he said.
“But this isn’t realistic.
“We are sponsored by the local Council who we have an excellent relationship with.
“We’ve got the fans and don’t want to leave Bury without a football club.”
Meanwhile, Rangers’ new chief executive Charles Green and manager Ally McCoist will meet with members of the playing squad next week to discuss their futures.
The squad are contracted to parent company Rangers Football Club plc, which is soon to be liquidated, and Green wants the deals to be moved across to his new company.
