January 16 – Iraq’s wonder kid Muhannad Ali set a new regional record in the AFC Asian Cup 2019 by becoming the youngest Arab player to ever score in the continental showpiece. He has also become the third youngster to have scored in the competition’s history.
Muhannad netted the opening goal against Vietnam in his country’s 3-2 victory in Group D in Asia Cup 2019 in the United Arab Emirates, aged 18 years, 6 months and 26 days. The previous Arab record was held by Saudi’s Mehisen Al-Jamaan.
Al-Jamaan scored Saudi’s winning goal in the 1-0 victory against Kuwait in the Asian Cup 1984. His record had remained intact for almost 34 years according to mundial11.
Muhannad plays for the Police club in Iraq but reports have linked him with clubs from outside the country following his outstanding performance for Iraq. Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers have reportedly shown interest.
