July 22 – Italy striker Antonio Cassano has been fined €15,000 (£11,800/$18,200) by UEFA for homophobic comments made during the recent European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.
The Milan forward caused uproar when he declared that he hoped there were no homosexuals in the Italian team and has already apologised following criticism from Italian gay groups.
UEFA said Cassano had been sanctioned for a “discriminatory press statement” and had three days to appeal.
Asked at a news conference during last month’s tournament to comment on reports that there were two “secret” gays in the Italy squad, he said: “The coach had warned me that you would ask me this question.
“If I say what I think … I hope there are none.
“But if there are queers here, that’s their business.”
In his apology, Cassano, who insists his comments had been misinterpreted, said: “I am sincerely sorry that my comments have caused controversy and protests among gay groups.
“Homophobia is not a point of view that I share.
“I didn’t want to offend anyone and it is not for me to pass judgement over a person’s sexual freedom.
“It is not for me to pass judgment on the choices of others.”
Cassano was one of Italy’s most impressive players at Euro 2012, helping them reach the final barely six months after undergoing minor heart surgery.
